Wright v. CITGO; Nueces County, Texas

Lonnie Wright was fifty-three years old when he was killed in an explosion at the CITGO Corpus Christi, Texas Refinery on August 9, 1999. He began working for CITGO on March 31, 1969, and he spent most of his employment at the local plant in the maintenance department. The last two years before his death he had worked in the operations department as an instrument technician and was a participant in the company´s multi-skilled program. On the day he was fatally injured, Mr. Wright was standing on a platform assisting in lighting Boiler A at the local CITGO plant when the boiler blew up. Hours passed before the Nueces County medical examiner was allowed to remove his body. An investigation by the law firm who was hired to represent Mr. Wright´s widow uncovered plant records that reflected substandard conditions within the boiler area, including Boiler A. These substandard conditions had been known to plant management for many years. As part of the settlement in this case, CITGO agreed to upgrade boilers at the refinery to comply with National Fire Protection Association Code standards. Mrs. Wright and her attorneys established the Wright Family Scholarship Fund to provide scholarships for local and area students who attend Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, to encourage them to study and solve industrial problems such as this.
